Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer worldwide today, so it’s important to know the warning signs of skin cancer. In the United States alone, one in five individuals will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. There, an estimated 8,500 individuals are diagnosed with skin cancer every day.

Everyone should be cautious of overexposure to the sun, but people with fair skin and those with moles should taken extra precaution due to their increased likelihood of developing the disease.

The warning signs you need to look out for:

  • A sore, or red spot on the skin that doesn’t heal within a month.
  • For people with moles, a spread of pigment beyond the border of the mole into the surrounding skin.
  • An irregular bump that is sore, itchy, or scabs and crusts over.
  • A spot that bleeds for no obvious reason

Know the signs of skin cancer and be sure to self-examine your skin regularly to spot any changes. The best advice of all though, is to consistently apply sunblock before going out, and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.
